Have you heard about our academic folk group Ozara? The folklore group from Slovenia is based on a 70-year tradition, preserving and recreating the dance, singing and orchestral traditions.

Our folklore group (Slovenia) has been operating since 1952, when a dance group was first formed in Kranj, and in the following decades, a male and female choir joined it.

Today, Ozara folk group in Europe and worldwide brings together:

• four dance groups of different ages, a singing section
• and an orchestra.

The members have been trained by experts, especially Tončka Marolt, and have taken their knowledge to numerous stages across Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia.

The turning point came in the 1980s, when the younger generation arrived with new ideas and knowledge. At that time, the first own choreographies began to be created and the repertoire expanded to other Slovenian regions. Ozara is not just a society, it is a part of our everyday life and a heartfelt story about a culture that lives on.

Academic folklore group Ozara

Our folk group performs throughout Europe and worldwide, and every year we organize an annual concert and participate in numerous events. The costumes of our folk group (Slovenia) are carefully crafted according to historical sources and lovingly preserve the authenticity of the Slovenian past.

They are made according to the model of authentic clothing from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are based on research and knowledge gained at seminars. We adapt them to individual settings, and most of them were sewn by long-time member Jožica Šmid.

In Ozara we cultivate friendships, intergenerational cooperation and love for Slovenian roots. Together we grow, create and write a story that connects the past with the present.
